Lupus Hawai`i

A foundation with heart, dedicated to touching lives, founded on faith and hope for the future.

Established in 1974, Lupus Hawai`i was founded with the purpose of offering assistance to those affected with lupus. Through the heart and dedication of parents who lost a child, with their friend who shared their pain, a journey began to share information and support to our community about people suffering from a disease that was relatively unknown. They did it through music, entertainment and guest speaking. They went into the schools and the communities.

Soon, they were joined by two friends, who were also patients, and together created educational classes and supprt groups and incorporation with a non-profit status.  This is our legacy, the basis for our purpose and journey.

Our name and location has changed, but our heart and mission remains focused on what is important. Our vision is clear, our Board of Directors, Advisory Council and Medical Advisory Council are dedicated and our staff is committed to providing the support system necessary and deserving of the patients and their family/friends.

NOTE: Lupus Hawai`i (formerly Lupus Foundation of America, Hawai`i Chapter) has disaffiliated from the Lupus Foundation of America, as of November 17, 2007.  We are now an independent organization, and are not associated with the Lupus Foundation of America in any way.  Mahalo!

What we do:

Our President, Cheryl Ann Jong is a lupus patient and has been all her life.  She is open about her life, her chronic diseases, how it affects her family and lifestyle.  She speaks openly about what lupus is and how we (as a community) can come together to help each other through awareness, support, education and advocacy.

We also have trained volunteers to support patients in their transition as they first learn of their diagnosis, accept their treatments, learn to be advocates for themselves and their family members - so they know they are not alone and this is not in their heads.

Through our phone, emails, website, hospital visitis and personal one-on-one visits,  FaceBook, in-services, get-togethers (support groups), activities and our newsletters, we will do our best to keep everyone as informed and included as we can.
